Behind the Bar: Classic Grenadine Cocktails with Emily Morton

By:  | | , ,

We visited our Runamok cocktail consultant, Emily Morton, at her cocktail lounge – The 126 in Burlington, Vermont – to reimagine some classic cocktails with our brand new Maple Grenadine.

Emily Morton wears many hats: 2019 Vermont Bartender of the Year, jazz cocktail lounge proprietor, and walking spirits encyclopedia. We’re also incredibly grateful to have her as a Runamok cocktail consultant as we build our line of cocktail mixers + bitters.

When we asked Emily her thoughts on grenadine as a bar essential, she shared:

“Grenadine is a great example of the boomerang we are seeing in craft cocktailing – it started at the turn of the 20th century as a pomegranate syrup, was mass produced in the 1980’s as an artificially colored and flavored red concoction, and is now coming back to cocktailing as a pomegranate syrup yet again. We finally are making classics again that taste the way they were intended to taste when they were created.”

Emily’s favorite way to use grenadine at her bar?

“My favorite way to use grenadine is in the aforementioned classics – like Jack Rose, Singapore Sling, Hurricane, etc. Experiencing a cocktail the way it was intended is such a cool part of my job.”

Check out some of Emily’s favorite grenadine classics below. Then go grab a bottle and try them out for yourself! Cheers
