This is a fun, sparkly, kid-friendly drink for your Fourth of July party – with a bit of science involved! This is a stratified drink that is layered with a festive red, white, and blue. The way you achieve this is to play with density and velocity of the three liquids you’ll be adding. The dense Grenadine syrup sits at the bottom of the glass. A careful pour of a soda and sparkle maple mixture sits as the middle layer. Everything is topped off with a blue sports drink for a fun and festive treat!

Note: this drink can be quite sweet, so feel free to substitute plain seltzer or reduce the quantities of Grenadine and Sparkle Syrup to taste. This fun experiment can get a bit messy with little helpers pouring, but it’s a perfect outdoor activity for a July 04th barbecue – and this science experiment comes with a sweet reward!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • 1 Add Maple Grenadine to an empty high ball glass.
  • 2 Add ice.
  • 3 In a separate glass mix the seltzer with Sparkle Syrup.
  • 4 Slowly pour the seltzer and syrup mixture over the back of a spoon into the glass with grenadine and ice, using the spoon the break up the velocity of the pour. *Note: it is important to hold the spoon close to the ice and pour very slowly so that the soda and syrup sits on top of the grenadine in a stratified layer.
  • 5 Using the same spoon technique, very slowly pour the blue sports drink over the back of a spoon into the glass so the blue sports drink sits on top creating a clear blue top layer over your red and white layers.
  • 6 Enjoy!
